I wanted him during the offseason and I'd like to see him play here in Buffalo again, now. He would provide terrific leadership (by example) for players like Ennis and Hodgson, among others. I would not deal Ott for him without a high draft pick attached to Briere heading Buffalo's way. However, at the right price... how could the Sabres not consider adding Briere for this year and next? Not to mention, come trade deadline... if he's putting up points for Buffalo, a contender may overpay for him 2 months from now.

Crap, now his value just went from a 4th rounder to a 3rd rounder. Or from LameO to Stafford. Get Staff healed quickly and pull the trigger Patty ... And who decided to play Staff the night he was rumored to be traded?

Agreed. Ott has too much value to be traded for a 36 year old ... But I would
love to get Danny back in Buffalo to see if he can ignite LameO as a last chance before a buyout in the offseason.

Ott is UFA. Not going to get you a 1st or even a 2nd. He's not that good.

This team would be way too boring without Ott & Moulson. Do not want to see either gone.

Don't get used to it cause they are UFA and will be traded for sure. No way they sign with Buf next year.

Moulson will get you a 1st. That first won't have an impact for a few years. You need to ice a team next year. Need some veteran players. Briere has one more year so it's not bad.

Well thank you Mr Optimism . Both players have stated they would have no problem signing here . Ott has been quite vocal about . Don't let the facts get in the way of you summary judgements . The decision now is can Buffalo get assets that are more valuable to them than resigning them. UFA players often get a good return at the trade deadline also if a team feels that player is the piece they need for a cup run.

Sorry for the lack of optimism but I'm just being realistic. It's a long way go get back to being a contender. Moulson and Miller will get you a 1st in a weak draft.

while i very much respect Briere, at 36 he is NOT the answer for this team.

How does he fit in with the youth movement direction this team has taken?

Exactly and he has one more year. He won't cost you any youth or prospect. You will also need to hit the cap floor.

They will get you more than that . But at this point they should be resigned to get to the cap floor next year. You have to spend the money . Better on a player you know , than in the free agent frenzy . That has sucked for every team that has bought into it.

Briere obviously was not happy about being turfed. He's a proud 36 year old veteran who hasn't gotten his fair shake yet in Montreal this season after signing a two year $8 million contract as a UFA last summer.

Garth, Briere started the season on the first line. When nothing good came of this, he was tried alongside Plekanec/Gionta, Eller/Galchenyuk, Gallagher, Prust, Bourque, Bournival and then eventually played himself down to the 4th line/press box when the coach ran out of players to try him with to get him going.

Terrible signing from day 1

If all they get are 2 1sts for Moulson and Miller, Lafontaine needs to quit.

I still maintain Regier should have been left in charge of the fire sale but told he is not allowed to negotiate contracts.

From experience, the last thing you want to do as a young hockey player is disappoint the veteran (especially the very veteran) players. Not having a crap attitude is step 1.

Next is playing to their level even if it's not directly correlated to your style of play. Learn a new way, embrace it and then strive to be better than the teacher. Which should be your goal from day 1. Attitude + Aptitude = Altitude.

In the NHL you will never be a commodity with an underdeveloped mind.

I agree, if I'm Buffalo I make an honest effort to sign Moulson, 30 goal scorers aren't easy to come by. I don't care that he scores ugly goals as long as he scores. Ott is valuable but to much is being expected of him, he is not a top 6 guy.
At some point we have to have some capable vets on this team, it can't be all prospects and draft choices. It's time they get a GM in here and start getting all these question marks straightened out.

I watched every Russia game and I am afraid to say Grigorenko reminds me of Ville Leino. I hope I am wrong, but it seems he doesn't want to engage in contact. That is something he is going to need to do to play at a high level in the NHL.

I don't think youth movement means 23 young guys and no grizzled vets on the roster. Use the Myers/Tallinder situation in Myers rookie season as an example. A guy like Briere might not be the answer long term but like Ott if they lead by example for the younger guys it hopefully rubs off.

Agree with your first sentence, which conflict with your earlier post. Teams way over pay at deadline and in FA... So it is likely the Sabres will get more for each, just look at the trades for Goose, Pommer and Vanek (although Vanek wasn't at either of those times). So, I do believe each will have good value at the deadline. If they don't for some reason, then I am just as happy to sign both, both who have stated publicly that they like it here in Buffalo...and with all the picks and young prospects the rebuild doesn't need to take 3 years...keep some key veterans, acquire a couple more for short term (ie Briere) to mentor and bridge the development gap and in 2 years can be battling Toronto and Canadians for a playoff spot.
That said, I wouldn't mind seeing if the Sabres can get McDavide next year..so sucking for another year is fine...then turn up the heat on the rebuild!

Ya, I wanted him bad after Galchenyuk was drafted, but man is he a disappointment so far...very lazy and a perimeter player unless the slot is wide open...low compete level and not a great skater...too much to overcome. next year, a full season in Rochester might wake him up .. He is a perfect example of someone who needs to ride the bus for a couple of years..get called up periodically for 2 - e games to remind him of the difference. If that doesn't work..trade him for whatever you cab get..like maybe Yak who is just as confused by the concept of D.

"Russia takes home their second bronze medal in a row while Canada head home empty handed for the second year in a row. This marks the first time since 1981 that Canada has been denied a medal in back to back World Junior Championships."

This is just perfect for the self-imposed champions to have to swallow! That team was supposedly loaded with stud players...who collapsed mightily! Now, can't wait for the Olympic collapse as well. That might get them off their high horses for awhile.
